I know it's not car related but there are some gamers and other tech people on here that might find this cool. The quick version is that Epic Games made a short film that was rendered in real time on their newest Unreal Engine. Something that normally takes several hours per frame on a supercomputer, Epic did on run of the mill high-end consumer hardware 30 times a second.
I came across it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Also, the coolest part: Unreal4 is free*.
*OK, you have to pay royalties if you actually make any money from it but that's still pretty awesome to be able to get a piece of software like this purely to tinker and not have to pay anything.

Good that they are giving out the tools for free, just like Valve.
